The State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals was founded by the Chinese government in 1989 in Dalian University of Technology. The current director of the laboratory is Professor Xiaojun Peng.

The major research interests of the laboratory fall into 3 categories with the profiles of both fundamental and applied aspects: (1) Dyes and dye-related photochemistry: dyes for textiles, dyes for bio-technologies, dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells and visible-light-driven hydrogen production, photoelectronic devices, etc; (2) Advanced functional materials: polymer materials, carbon nano-materials, nano-metal oxides, functional membrane materials,; (3) Environmentally benign technologies for fine chemicals: molecular sieve catalysts, transition metal complex catalysts, and nano-catalysts for clean production of fine chemicals, ecologically fine chemicals and their preparation processes.

Recognized for its excellence in connecting basic research to the industrial applications in fine chemicals, the laboratory has become the most important center in China for frontier research, technical innovation and graduate student training in the fields of fine chemicals. From its establishment till now, the laboratory has been authorized to grant academic degrees of PhD and Master. The laboratory also accepts postdoctoral research associates and short-term visiting researchers from abroad.

The research activities in this laboratory have been mainly funded by the Chinese government through various programs, such as National Basic Research Program (973), National High Technology Research and Development Program (863), Natural Science Foundation as well as 11and 85projects. The mighty government programs together with industrial funds have effectively promoted the establishment of the well-defined research platforms and related infrastructures. During the past 5 years, the laboratory has published more than 790 SCI-indexed papers, and has been officially granted about 100 patents (national or international). Many innovative technologies have been successfully commercialized. Three projects won prestigious National Awards for Technological Invention or Science and Technical Progress.

The laboratory has a strong faculty of 61 permanent researchers, including one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 31 full professors, 19 associate professors and 10 research associates. Within the faculty, 3 professors have gained the title of Changjiang Professor of the Ministry of Education, 2 professors with the title of Changjiang Guest Professors, 6 won the National Outstanding Young Investigators Award from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and 13 were granted the Trans-Century or New Century Excellent Young Talent Award of the Ministry of Education.

The laboratory has also very intensive training programs for undergraduates(BSand graduates (MS or PhD ). Three PhD students have obtained the award for National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of China.

The laboratory has an ambition to develop an active, creative and collaborative high-level institute with international reputation.
